Jake is an open source application that allows you to share files with a group of people in a seamless manner.  Unlike other file syncing services such as DropBox, Jake allows any amount of data to travel through clients with out limits.

Jake is able to do this with out using a central server to stores files. The application is built on the Java 6 runtime environment and is compatible with Linux, Mac OS X and Windows.  The Jabber protocol is used to validate users which works great for people who already have a Gmail account.  We tried out Jake for a night and put together a comparison chart.  Both Dropbox and Jake are very similar applications with a few but very clear differences. This comparison chart should help you choose which application best suits your situation.

hunch.com aggresively learns about you to make decisions

hunchHunch helps you make decisions and gives you results based on questions you have already answered about yourself. I started answering questions today (which is surprisingly addicting), and after a while decided to ask it a question. The service uses what it already knows about you and applies that to your survey automatically. The answers I received from my questions were pretty bang on. It may ask you a few more questions to narrow down results but the service is surprisingly robust.

Xbox360 Lite-On firmware updates are painful

As a rule of thumb, I like to do a lot of research before starting a project. It helps to save a ridiculous amount of time before undergoing any complicated task. A few months ago I ordered a gadget to aid in changing the firmware on my Xbox 360’s optical drive.

I then ordered some tools from Deal Extreme for disassembling the Xbox 360 chasis. I am forever glad that I ordered the tools to take this monster apart.

Doing more research rendered another issue. Not every SATA controller in the world works with the software I have to use to do this mod.  I was happy to find out that users running mainboards with the Nforce 4 chipset were not having issues.

iPhone 3.0 Software Tomorrow

Apple is releasing the iPhone 3.0 software tomorrow. iPod Touch owners can get their hands on it for a fee. A lot of new features to be excited about this time around. I won’t go into specifics as you can read them on the Apple website.

I’m going to have to buy a pair of bluetooth headphones since the tethering is finally being added.

How to fix a blank Airport icon MAC OS X Leopard and Tiger

Occasionally, I’ll run into a computer that is connected to wifi but the airport icon appears blank. A blank airport icon is supposed to indicate that the airport card is turned off. A quick survey of the airport drop-down menu may show a check mark next to your network still.
